How to Make a Wig Look Natural
Choose Wigs with Pre-Cut Lace Fronts
Many modern wigs now come with pre-cut lace fronts, meaning the lace is already professionally trimmed and ready to wear. This makes them much easier for beginners.
Brands like Belle Tress, which we carry at Wild Mane Hair Co, are known for their beautifully designed ear-to-ear lace fronts that come ready to wear right out of the box.
This eliminates the need for cutting or customizing the lace and helps create a natural-looking hairline with minimal effort.
Rooted Colors
Rooted shades help wigs look much more realistic.
Many modern wig colors feature rooted tones, meaning the color near the scalp is slightly darker. This creates depth and dimension that closely mimics natural hair growth. If you see the word Rooted or “-R” at the end of a color it means it is rooted.
Belle Tress and TressAllure do this beautifully. In fact, Brandi has been known to use Loreal Magic Root Touch Up Spray on some of her wigs to help create that realism.
Using a Wig Cap
Many wig wearers also like to use a wig cap underneath their wig to help keep natural hair smooth and create a secure foundation. It even helps if you get a wig cap the color of your skin to help make any parts look more natural. We sell our favorite the super-popular Dreamlover 2-in-1 Wig Grip Caps. These viral caps combine a soft velvet grip band + breathable wig cap for the perfect secure fit — no slip, no glue, no headaches. Perfect for your glueless wigs and sensitive scalps. Available in nude and brown.

Combing the Wig
In a perfect world, it would be great to be able to just pull a wig out of the box and immediately go out the door with it, but being squished into a box can affect the shape. It’s really best to take a wide tooth wig comb that will help break up some of that flatness and is an easy tool to give it some life. Using a very slight side to side motion and pulling backwards is the best way to break up that zig zag part you see on a lot of wigs.
Using Heat
Using heat (only on heat-friendly fibers) is also a great way to add some oomph to your wig. Blowing in the direction you want the hair to go and pinning it in place until it completely cools is very easy to do. Just hold the dryer in the wig cap for a few seconds (it really doesn’t take long at all) and then put the wig on a stand or your head and move it into place and pin it with a hair clip.
